Preparing For Agility CompetitionsOne of my best things to do with a dog is dog agility. Not only is it great fun for you and your dog and will keep you both fit and healthy, but you get a real sense of achievement to see your dog performing some amazing feats.

Although it is highly enjoyable, it does require more of a commitment than other forms of dog training. For those of you unfamiliar with the term ‘dog agility’ it refers to a sport where dogs are usually required to run a course containing obstacles. Each of the obstacles must be overcome. The dog who has the least number of faults completed in the least amount of time is the winner. It is becoming a very popular sport in many countries around the world.

There are two types of obstacle courses, each with their own sets of challenges and required skills. Jumping courses are as they sound – there are things to jump over. The types of jumps can vary greatly in height, length, number and composition. It requires a lot of skill to avoid knocking any of jumps such as these over.

The other type of obstacle course is an agility course. In these there will be various contact points which a dog must touch. These can be amongst the most difficult of agility course and will require a great deal of agility training.

Entering your dog in an agility show will require you to be a member of an agility club and perhaps even of a kennel club as well. There is bound to be one in your area. You will find the members will also usually be very helpful and pleased to welcome someone new to the sport. They may even give you some guidance in training your dog for agility.

Dog agility is not only fun to be a part of, but it is spectacular to watch. If you are interested in this form of dog training, make contact with a local club and go along to a meet to see what is involved. It might be something you and your dog will fall in love with.
